How to Install Vinyl Flooring
Vinyl flooring is a durable and affordable option that offers style without compromise. Its low-maintenance, resilient nature, and water resistance make it an excellent choice for busy families, especially those with children or pets.
Plus, vinyl is easy for the average person to install, requiring only basic knowledge and minimal tools.
Vinyl Flooring Installation Methods
There are various methods for installing vinyl flooring, each offering distinct advantages depending on factors such as subfloor type and personal preference.
-
Floating Installation: Utilizes a click-lock system, where vinyl planks or tiles interlock without adhesive. This method is suitable for DIY.
-
Glue-Down Installation: Secures vinyl planks or tiles directly to the subfloor using adhesive. Read more about this method in our glue-down installation guide.
-
Peel-and-Stick Installation: Utilizes self-adhesive backing on vinyl tiles or planks for quick and easy installation, a popular choice for DIY projects.
DIY Vinyl Installation
Before beginning your DIY vinyl installation, consult the manufacturer's guide, including acclimation instructions. Ensure your subfloor is clean, dry, and level to provide a smooth surface for installation. Gather your materials and tools:
-
Utility knife
-
Tape measure
-
Underlayment (floating installation)
-
Tapping block (floating installation)
-
Spacers (floating installation)
-
Roller (peel-and-stick installation)

Adhesive remover (peel-and-stick installation)
Floating Vinyl Installation
-
Lay the underlayment to provide cushioning and moisture protection if needed.
-
Plan the layout of the vinyl planks or tiles, starting from a corner and working outward, leaving a small expansion gap along the walls.
-
Install the first row of planks, ensuring they are straight and aligned with the layout plan, using a tapping block and rubber mallet to secure them tightly together.
-
Continue installing subsequent rows of flooring, locking them into place with the click-lock system, staggering the seams for a more natural appearance.
-
Use a utility knife to cut planks as needed to fit around obstacles or at the end of rows, ensuring a snug fit.
-
Once all planks are installed, remove any spacers and trim excess underlayment along the edges.
Peel-and-Stick Vinyl Installation
-
Start in a corner of the room and peel off the backing from the first tile or plank.
-
Align the edge of the tile or plank with the starting wall or reference line, ensuring it is straight and level.
-
Press the tile or plank firmly onto the subfloor, smoothing out any air bubbles or wrinkles.
-
Continue installing subsequent tiles or planks, working row by row and maintaining consistent alignment.
-
Use a roller to firmly bond the vinyl to the subfloor.
-
Trim the edges as needed for a neat finish.
Vinyl Flooring Care & Maintenance
To maintain the appearance and longevity of your vinyl flooring, sweep regularly to remove dust, dirt, and debris that can scratch the surface. For deeper cleaning, use a damp mop with a mild detergent solution. Quickly wipe up spills to prevent staining and avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the vinyl. Use felt pads under furniture legs to prevent scratches, and place rugs in high-traffic areas.
With minimal effort and the right tools, vinyl flooring offers a straightforward installation process that is accessible to the average homeowner. Browse our vinyl catalog to begin your next flooring project.
